Expedia lost almost a quarter of its share of European OTA bookings between 2019 and 2021, and in 2025 it was only just back above its 2019 level. To win bookings back, it keeps asking hotels for more: bigger discounts, extra discounts for members and higher commission. Here is what we see most, and what it costs you.
Four Ways Expedia Asks for More
Member Only Deals
A discount only signed-in members see, shown with a badge in search results.
Extra member discount
More off for members on top of a running promotion, or across all your rates.
Campaigns
Seasonal sales with a minimum discount: for Black Friday 2024, 20% off plus a 10% Member Only Deal.
Accelerator
Extra commission on every stay it brings, in return for a higher place in search results.
How the Discounts Stack
Each step looks small. Together they take a large share of your rate.

Example. Expedia’s commission is often 15 to 18%; at 15% you keep 61 EUR. How Expedia combines the two discounts can differ, so check the final member price in your own extranet.
Who Pays for the Sale
20% + 10%Entry ticket
The minimum discount to join Expedia’s Black Friday 2024 campaign.

Guests could stay at that price until mid-December 2025, so next season sold at sale prices too.
51%Undercut
Hotels that say OTAs sell below their prices at least occasionally; 4 in 5 of them did not agree (HOTREC 2026).
The discount comes off your rate, and Expedia’s commission is charged on what is left. Expedia pays for the marketing; your rate pays for the sale.
What to Check
1List every promotion
Marketing, then Promotions: what is active, for which dates, and which add a member discount on top.
2Check the member price
Sign in as a member on Expedia and look at the final price of your own rooms.
3Join campaigns on your terms
Only for dates you need to fill, and never below your lowest acceptable net rate.
